How to prepare for your appointment

  • Sun exposure, including tanning beds and the application of sunless tanning products, must be avoided for 2 weeks prior to and after the treatment, preferably 4 weeks. Sun exposure, tanning, and sunless tanning products decrease the effectiveness of the laser treatment and increase the chance of post-treatment complications.

  • The treatment area must be clean, and free of any lotion, makeup, and sunscreen. (If you have any of these on, they must be completely washed off prior to treatment.)

  • Accutane and any other photosensitizing medication should be discontinued for a period of at least 6 months prior to receiving treatment and should not be used during your course of treatment.

  • Waxing and or the use of chemical products must be avoided in the treatment area for 2 weeks before and after the treatment to avoid skin sensitivity.

  • Shaving is allowed before treatment to remove surface hair in the areas to be treated.

  • You may not be pregnant.

  • During the course of your treatments, notify our staff of any changes to your medical history, health status, or personal activities that may be relevant to your treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT

• Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.

• The treatment should take approximately 15-30 minutes depending on the treatment size and color.

• Numbing is not required but it is available upon request. We provide the Zimmer chiller to make the treatment more comfortable.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER TREATMENT

We will dress the tattoo for you after your treatment. We advise that you keep the area clean and dry using only Aquaphor® unless directed otherwise. The same care you did after getting your tattoo is what you will do after each removal session.

  •  Immediately after treatment, there may be “frosting” on the area that is treated. Redness and swelling are typical. Pinpoint bleeding may also occur.

  • A cool compress may be applied and Tylenol is recommended for discomfort.

  • The treated area should be cared for delicately until healing is complete and care should be taken to avoid trauma to the area for the first 7 days after treatment.

  • Clean the treated area daily allowing water or shower to run over the wound, and then pat the area dry.

  • Apply Aquaphor ointment to wound area 2-3 times a day. Keep the area moist, and let the scab fall off on its own.

  • Cover the treated area with a nonstick gauze pad (after Aquaphor is applied) until the wound is healed.

  • DO NOT pick, peel, rub, scrub, or scratch the skin in the treatment area throughout the healing process. If crusting occurs, do not shave or pick the area.

  • Although blisters and scabs can be a normal response to tattoo removal, most patients will not experience them. In the case that you do, it is important to not pop or pick at them. If the blister pops on its own, keep the skin over it covered with a healing ointment and gauze to promote healing and prevent scarring.

  • No swimming or using hot tubs/whirlpools until the wound heals.

  • Physical exercise that causes perspiration should be discontinued for at least 2-7 days after treatment as excessive perspiration may disrupt the healing process.

  • Avoid sun exposure. When the treatment area is exposed to the sun use a thick layer of 30+ SPF sunblock with zinc oxide and reapply every 2 hours.

  • Contact our office immediately if there is any indication of blistering or infection (redness, tenderness, or pus).

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ

WHAT IS PICOLAZER TATTOO REMOVAL?

The PicoLazer is used to safely and effectively remove tattoos without leaving scar tissue. It's a revolutionary new treatment that does not solely rely on heat to burn or melt away unwanted body art or pigments that cause dark spots in your skin. It is different and more advanced than the traditional Q-switch laser. The ability to use pico and nanotechnology to break up the pigment into smaller particles then go back and micronize the pigment helps resolve tattoos in a fewer number of treatments without burning the skin and leaving behind unwanted scars. At Renew Wellness Center, our skilled team provides this innovative tattoo removal process for Sugar Land, TX patients. Learn more by contacting our state-of-the-art facility.

HOW DOES PICOLASER REMOVE TATTOOS?

As soon as our team determines that your skin is ideal for tattoo removal, the tattoo will be prepped with a careful cleansing and an application of a topical anesthetic. The PicoLazer works by sending ultra-short pulses of energy – without heat – to targeted problem areas. The laser's impact on the skin is intense, shattering the problem skin pigment or particles. Although its pulses of energy are highly concentrated, the laser's effect is gentle to the outer layer of the skin. The treatment time can vary and depends on the size of the treatment area. Sometimes, the tattoo may require a number of treatments before noticeable results are seen. These factors will all be discussed with you during your consultation at Renew Wellness Center.

HOW MANY TATTOO REMOVAL SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

The number of treatments depends on the age, location, size, and color, as well as its proximity to the heart. The laser’s ability to use long pulse and short pulse allows us to break up the treatment into much finer particles, helping your body break it down easier.

Although far fewer treatment sessions are needed for the PicoLazer to remove your tattoo, it still requires more than a single session. These PicoLazer tattoo removal sessions must be spaced between 8-12 weeks apart so that your skin can calm and your lymphatic system can carry away the broken-up ink particles created by the laser energy.

Is PicoLazer tattoo removal painful?

There is some pain associated with PicoLazer tattoo removal. Pain is managed with numbing cream and blowing chilled air (Zimmer Chiller).

What is my aftercare following tattoo removal?

We will dress the tattoo for you after your treatment. We advise that you keep the area clean and dry using only Aquaphor® unless directed otherwise. The same care you did after getting your tattoo is what you will do after each removal session.

How many tattoo removal treatment sessions are required?

The number of sessions needed is specific to each person and each tattoo. A variety of factors are taken into consideration, including the age of the tattoo, the color of the ink, the density of the ink, the location of the tattoo, your body’s immune system, and many other factors. Most tattoos need between 5 to 10 treatments for complete removal.

Will the tattoo completely disappear after tattoo removal?

In many cases, yes. However, it is very important to know that some ink colors are more difficult to clear than others.

What are the side effects of tattoo removal?

The most common side effects patients experience are redness, scabbing, blistering, and temporary lightening or darkening of the skin. Do not be alarmed if you experience any of these side effects. They are healthy signs and natural indications that your body is healing.

Is there any downtime after the tattoo removal procedure?

Patients can return to regular activities immediately following the treatment but are advised to avoid swimming for 3-5 days post-treatment. Good sun protection is a must, and we advise physical sunblock over chemical sunscreens.
