Laser Vein Removal Therapy is used to target spider veins in the face and legs. The gold standard treatment for spider veins is laser therapy. Spider veins, also known medically as telangiectasia or venulectasias, are tiny red, blue or purple thread-like veins near the surface of the skin that often take on the appearance of a spider’s web. These perpetually dilated and visible veins, caused by increased pressure to the veins, can develop on any part of the body, including the face, but most often appear on the thighs, calves, ankles or buttocks.

Watch our youtube video hosted by Dr. Nina Desai “How to instantly get rid of spider veins!” She discusses how the Excel V laser can handle spider veins in a flash and how to best prepare  for this procedure.

How to prepare for your appointment

Before your treatment:

  •   Do not wear makeup on the day of treatment

  •   No sun-tanning or self-tanners 4 weeks prior to treatment. Includes spray tans, tanning lotions, tanning beds, sun exposure, etc.

  •   Some medications or supplements may increase the risk of bruising. Consult with your physician

  •   Avoid treatments that may irritate the skin for 1-2 weeks prior to treatment (waxing, depilatories, etc.)

  •   Notify your provider of any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment

  •   History of herpes or cold sores may require an anti-viral prescription prior to treatment

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT

• Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.

• The treatment should take 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the treatment area.

• Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulse of the energy is delivered from the laser. Although no local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required, some patients opt to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment.

• Following treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER TREATMENT

  •   Avoid sun exposure and use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen to prevent further sun damage

  •   Bruising, redness, and swelling are common and resolve with time

  •   A “bug bite look” is common and usually resolves in 1-2 days

  •   Avoid heat – hot tubs, saunas, etc. for 1-2 days

  •   Avoid skin irritants a few days post-treatment. Products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents, etc.

  •   Notify your provider of concerns (blistering, excessive redness/swelling, etc.)

  •   Leg vein treatments only:

o Compression stockings (20-30 mm/hg) are optional
o Avoid high-impact activity for 3-5 days
o Hemosiderin staining (brown staining) may occur after treatment and usually resolves with time (can take 1-2years) but, on rare occasions, it may be permanent
o Strict avoidance of sun exposure may decrease the risk of permanent hemosiderin staining

o Large leg veins may take many months to resolve and should not be re-treated before then

  •   Consult with your provider about when to resume your skincare regime.

Laser Vein Removal FAQ

WHAT IS LASER VEIN THERAPY?

Laser Vein Therapy is used to target spider veins in the face and legs. The gold standard treatment for spider veins is laser therapy. Spider veins, also known medically as telangiectasia or venulectasias, are tiny red, blue or purple thread-like veins near the surface of the skin that often take on the appearance of a spider's web. These perpetually dilated and visible veins, caused by increased pressure to the veins, can develop on any part of the body, including the face, but most often appear on the thighs, calves, ankles or buttocks.

HOW does IT WORK?

The Cutera CoolGlide laser delivers pulses of light energy which causes the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, where it should be.
